Freeman Recovery Center’s Levels of Care and BCBS Alabama Coverage

Understanding which specific programs at Freeman align with your BCBS Alabama benefits helps you plan before making a call. Here is how the care continuum at FRC maps to the coverage types BCBS Alabama behavioral health plans typically authorize.

Medically Monitored Detox in Burns, Tennessee

Medically Monitored Detox in Burns, Tennessee

Freeman Recovery Center’s medically monitored detox program is located at the Burns, TN campus and provides 24/7 clinical supervision throughout withdrawal. Medical detox is among the highest-priority coverage items under behavioral health parity; BCBS Alabama plans almost uniformly cover medically monitored detox when there is documented clinical necessity. FRC’s clinical team prepares the documentation needed to support authorization.

Residential Treatment

Residential Treatment

Also located in Burns, TN, Freeman’s residential program offers structured inpatient care ranging from short-term stays of 7, 14, 21, or 30 days to longer-term programs at 60, 90, and 180 days. BCBS Alabama plans typically authorize residential treatment in increments, with ongoing clinical reviews to confirm continued medical necessity. Freeman’s clinical team handles those reviews throughout your stay.

For residents coming from Alabama who need stable housing closer to Nashville while stepping down to outpatient care, FRC’s sober living homes in Middle Tennessee are an option worth asking about during the admissions call.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Freeman’s PHP is offered at the Dickson, TN outpatient facility and provides structured daytime clinical programming, typically five or more hours per day, without an overnight stay. PHP is frequently used as a step-down level of care after residential treatment, and BCBS Alabama plans generally cover it when clinical criteria are met. For Alabama residents whose BCBS plan requires in-state treatment or who prefer to remain closer to home, FRC also offers PHP through Freeman Recovery Online, a telehealth platform delivering live individual and group therapy via secure video.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

The IOP at Freeman Recovery Center in Dickson includes structured therapy sessions typically three or more hours per day and evening sessions for those managing work, parenting, or other obligations. IOP is a commonly covered level of care under behavioral health benefits. Prior authorization requirements vary by plan and will be confirmed during the free benefits verification call. BCBS Alabama’s behavioral health coverage frequently includes IOP when a referral or treatment plan is in place.

Freeman Recovery Online also delivers IOP via telehealth for Alabama residents who want to participate in structured treatment while remaining closer to home.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Many FRC patients carry co-occurring diagnoses, meaning a mental health condition such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or a mood disorder alongside a substance use disorder. Under the MHPAEA, BCBS Alabama plans must cover mental health and substance use disorder treatment on par with medical benefits. When both diagnoses are clinically documented, treatment for both can often be authorized under a single benefits package. Freeman’s clinical team is experienced in building the documentation BCBS needs to authorize dual diagnosis care.

Using BCBS of Alabama at Our Tennessee Treatment Center

One of the most common questions the Freeman Recovery Center admissions team receives from Alabama residents is whether BCBS of Alabama pays for treatment in a different state. The short answer: it depends on your plan type and the facility’s network status.

    In-Network vs. Out-of-Network Benefits

Most BCBS Alabama members have access to the BlueCard network, which is one of the largest provider networks in the country and extends well beyond Alabama’s borders. Freeman Recovery Center accepts BCBS coverage and has experience working with Alabama members seeking addiction treatment in Tennessee. Whether your specific BCBS Alabama plan covers FRC as in-network or out-of-network is confirmed during the free admissions verification call, and the team will walk you through what that distinction means for your cost-sharing before you make any decisions.

When a facility is in-network, negotiated rates apply and cost-sharing is typically lower. When treatment is out-of-network, many BCBS plans still provide partial coverage, though the member’s share of cost is usually higher. The FRC admissions team will clarify your specific network status and what that means financially before you travel to Tennessee for care.

    Prior Authorization for Out-of-State Care

Inpatient and residential levels of care almost always require prior authorization from BCBS Alabama before admission. The Freeman Recovery Center admissions team manages this process on your behalf, submitting clinical documentation and working directly with BCBS case managers to obtain approval. This is a routine part of the admissions workflow at FRC, not an obstacle left to the patient to navigate alone.

Out-of-Network Benefits: What to Ask About

If Freeman Recovery Center is determined to be out-of-network for your specific BCBS Alabama plan, ask the insurance verification team about:

    • Your out-of-network deductible and how much of it has already been met
    • The allowed amount BCBS assigns for each level of care
    • Your coinsurance percentage after the deductible
    • Whether your plan has an out-of-pocket maximum that caps your total exposure

These numbers shape your actual financial responsibility, and Freeman’s admissions team will walk through them in plain language during your free verification call.

    3. Review Your Coverage Summary: The admissions team will explain what your plan covers for each applicable level of care, what your deductible and copay amounts are, and whether prior authorization is required.
    4. Clinical Assessment: A free clinical assessment helps determine which level of care is appropriate for your situation, which also forms the foundation of the prior authorization request.
    5. Same-Day Admission: When clinically appropriate and insurance is confirmed, Freeman offers same-day admission so the process does not slow down access to care.

There is no obligation to enroll after completing verification. The goal of the call is to give you accurate financial information so you can make a clear decision.

Why Alabama Residents Choose Freeman Recovery Center for Addiction Treatment in Tennessee

For Alabama residents seeking addiction treatment at Freeman Recovery Center, the size and structure of FRC’s program continuum are a significant part of the decision. FRC operates across more than 60 properties in Tennessee, with 200 beds and more than 350 patients receiving care daily across all levels. That scale translates to shorter wait times, greater program availability, and a full continuum of care within one organization.

Several other factors drive that decision:

    • Staff with Lived Experience: More than 50% of Freeman’s clinical and support staff are personally in recovery. That shapes how patients experience care from day one.
    • Full Continuum in One Network: Detox in Burns flows directly to residential, which steps down to PHP or IOP in Dickson, then to sober living and Freeman Recovery Online as needed. Patients do not have to restart with a new provider at each transition.’
    • Arise Faith-Based Track: For patients who want a Christ-centered treatment experience, Freeman’s “Arise” track integrates biblical principles as an optional foundation alongside clinical programming. Secular tracks are equally available.
    • Joint Commission Accreditation: Freeman Recovery Center earned Joint Commission accreditation, the standard most major carriers, including BCBS, use to evaluate facility eligibility for coverage.
    • Aftercare Built In: The Aercare alumni program, peer mentoring, and recovery coaching continue after discharge, which matters for Alabama residents who return home after residential or PHP-level care.

I came in and instantly wanted to leave I was scared and assumed how this place was based on looks then I made it to class and met the people and employees and fell in love! Like anywhere else its what you make of it. The EMDR therapy was phenomenal I was not a believer but it was one of the most helpful things I did I also enjoyed the Acupuncture. The only complaint I have is the staff that I loved are no longer there. Please reconsider bringing them back they helped me see the light!

This is my second review. It will be just wonderful as my first. My husband was here last year and they were wonderful. Unfortunately at no fault of anyone there he is now back. This second time they were just as wonderful. They got him a bed the first day he called them. When he arrived they all welcomed him again. No one ever wants to have their family member to have to go through addiction but thank God for people like Freeman who truly care and want nothing but the best. I look forward to watching my husband’s progress and being there every step of the way. Thank you Freeman for caring and not ever giving up.
