In Burns, Tennessee, we provide detox and residential treatment. Dickson is where day treatment and traditional outpatient care happen. Below is what daily life is like at each one, how people get from one to the other, and what our admissions team will ask when you call.
How Our Burns and Dickson Treatment Facilities Differ
The distinctive line between the two campuses is whether you need to sleep at the facility. It sounds like a scheduling question, but it is a medical one, and the answer shapes nearly everything else: where you spend your nights, who is watching over you, and how much of your outside life you hold onto.
Detoxing from alcohol, benzodiazepines, and other substances carries real risk, including seizures, which is why withdrawal is managed under clinical oversight around the clock rather than attempted at home. That stage requires a bed, a nurse on the unit, and a building designed around both. Clients at Burns stay at Burns for the full length of detox and residential treatment.
Once that risk has passed, treatment stops being about stabilization and starts being about rebuilding a life you can hold onto. That work does not require an overnight bed. It requires structure, clinical hours, somewhere stable to go home to, and a reliable way to get to and from the clinic. That is what Freeman Recovery Center’s Dickson campus and our recovery housing are built to deliver together.

A Day at Burns
Burns is our inpatient campus, home to the two most intensive levels of care we provide:
- Medically monitored detox. A nurse is on site 24 hours a day, and a physician is on call, so withdrawal is watched continuously rather than checked on.
- Residential treatment. Individual therapy, group work, and holistic programming inside a structured daily routine.
Clients stay here for the full duration of detox and residential treatment. Personal phones are held during your stay. The first weeks are hard enough without the outside world arriving in your pocket, and staff will help you stay in touch with the people who matter.
The setting is deliberately unlike a hospital. The building sits low and back from the road with a covered porch and manicured grounds around it. Inside are shared bedrooms, common living areas with couches and a fireplace, and larger rooms where groups meet and residents eat together. A chapel stands on the property, and our optional Arise faith-based track is available to anyone.

Dickson is where treatment continues once overnight care is no longer clinically necessary. Three levels of care take place on this campus:
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Daytime clinical programming, often the direct step-down from residential
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Fewer hours weekly, with evening groups for work or school schedules.
- Standard outpatient: Ongoing individual and group therapy once the intensive phase is behind you.
Almost everyone in our PHP and IOP lives in Freeman Recovery Center recovery housing and comes to the clinic each day. That is the norm here, not the exception, and it means you’re not asked to hold a fragile early recovery together in the event that you left an unstable environment. Personal phones are allowed outside of therapy hours.
Outpatient hours run Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 9 PM. You can be admitted directly to PHP or IOP without going through detox first, if that is what your assessment calls for. The campus sits in a plaza on State Street with on-site parking.

Most people move through more than one level of care, and the transitions are where treatment usually falls apart. Somebody finishes detox with nowhere stable to go, or they land a spot in an outpatient program and have no way to get there 5 days a week. We built around both of those problems rather than leaving them to you.
Freeman Recovery Center operates more than 20 recovery accommodations around town, and we run our own fleet of vans. That means we drive you from Burns to your recovery housing when you finish residential treatment, from your housing to the clinic and back every day that you have programming, and to medical appointments as they come up.
The standard progression runs in one direction:
- Medically monitored detox
- Residential treatment
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
- Standard outpatient and continuing care
Not everyone starts at the first step. Someone already medically stable may enter partway down. Each transition is a clinical decision your treatment team makes with you, not a separate admission you have to negotiate on your own.
Still Not Sure Which Campus You Belong At?
You do not have to work this out alone. Our admissions team sorts through it every day, usually in a few minutes on the phone, and they’ll tell you which campus fits your needs before you commit to anything. The call is free and completely confidential.
What the Admissions Team Will Ask You
You’re not expected to diagnose yourself before calling, or to arrive at the conversation with an answer already worked out. That is Freeman Recovery Center’s job. The assessment is free, confidential, and handled in a single phone call, and the questions are practical rather than probing. Expect to be asked the following related questions:
- What is your substance of choice, how much, and how recently?
- Have you been through withdrawal before, and how did it go?
- Any mental health diagnoses or medications you’re currently prescribed?
- Where would you be living during outpatient treatment?
- Are there any work, school, or family obligations we need to plan around?
- Do you have insurance coverage? If so, we can verify your policy details.
Nothing about the conversation obligates you to admit, and same-day admission is available when a bed is open and clinically appropriate.
How to Start Addiction Treatment at Freeman Recovery Center
Start with the phone call. From there, our team verifies your coverage and confirms the level of care and corresponding campus your assessment points to. We’ll walk you through what admission involves and when a bed is available. Nothing is committed until you decide it is, and the entire assessment costs you nothing.
