Does Aetna Cover Suboxone Treatment in Tennessee?

Aetna covers Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) as part of its behavioral health benefits under most plan types, including plans governed by the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act. For most Aetna members, Suboxone prescribed and administered as part of a medically supervised MAT program is a covered benefit, not an out-of-pocket expense you have to absorb entirely on your own. Coverage details vary by plan, so verifying your specific benefits before beginning treatment is always recommended.

Freeman Recovery Center works directly with Aetna to provide in-network MAT services at our Dickson, TN location. Being in-network typically means lower out-of-pocket costs, no balance billing surprises, and a smoother prior authorization process when you need it most.

What Aetna Typically Covers for MAT and Suboxone in Tennessee

Aetna’s behavioral health coverage for opioid use disorder generally includes several components of a Suboxone treatment plan. Specific coverage depends on your plan type, deductible, copay structure, and whether prior authorization is required. Our admissions team reviews all of this during your free benefits verification.

Covered services most Aetna plans include:

  • Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) prescription and dispensing
  • Physician or clinical prescriber evaluation and monitoring visits
  • MAT combined with individual counseling
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) incorporating MAT
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) incorporating MAT
  • Group therapy sessions as part of a structured MAT program
  • Medication management check-ins
  • Dual diagnosis treatment when a co-occurring mental health condition is present

Coverage levels vary. Some Aetna plans require prior authorization before Suboxone is prescribed, particularly for higher doses or extended duration. Others allow prescribing without prior authorization under specific clinical criteria. Freeman Recovery Center’s admissions team handles prior authorization requests on your behalf.

    Our In-Work Centers With Aetna

If you’re looking for Aetna-covered Suboxone clinics, doctors, and treatment near Nashville, Tennessee, Freeman Recovery Center offers comprehensive care for opioid addiction, including Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with Suboxone, at both of our Middle Tennessee locations. Our outpatient Suboxone treatment is available at 250 State St., Dickson, TN 37055, where we provide counseling and ongoing support as part of our outpatient programming, while our detoxification and residential treatment programs at 1615 Highway 96, Burns, TN 37029 also include specialized care for opioid dependence. Call (615) 645-3677 to learn more about your treatment options and verify your Aetna coverage.

How Freeman Recovery Center Uses Suboxone Within Treatment

Suboxone alone is not a complete treatment for opioid use disorder. The clinical evidence is clear: MAT works best when combined with structured counseling, behavioral therapy, and peer support. At Freeman Recovery Center, Suboxone is prescribed and monitored as one component of a broader treatment plan, not a standalone prescription service.

    Outpatient MAT with Counseling

    Outpatient MAT with Counseling

For patients who have already completed detox or residential care, outpatient MAT provides ongoing Suboxone management paired with regular counseling sessions. This is often the long-term maintenance phase, designed to stabilize cravings while behavioral therapy addresses the patterns that drove use in the first place.

    Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

    Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Freeman Recovery Center’s IOP provides several hours of structured therapy per week, with evening sessions available for patients who work or have family obligations. MAT can be integrated into IOP for patients who need medication support while maintaining their daily routines.

    Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

    Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

The PHP at Freeman Recovery Center offers daytime clinical programming with more intensive therapeutic hours than IOP. Patients live off-site, either at home or in one of FRC’s sober living homes, and attend structured programming during the day. MAT is available within this level of care as well.

Prior Authorization for Suboxone: What Aetna Requires at Freeman

Prior authorization (PA) is a formal approval process where your insurer confirms that a treatment is medically necessary before coverage applies. Aetna does require prior authorization for Suboxone under some plan types, particularly for:

    • Extended-duration prescriptions beyond an initial supply
    • Higher-dose buprenorphine formulations
    • Suboxone within certain structured program levels of care

This is not unusual, and it is not a reason to delay seeking treatment. Freeman Recovery Center’s admissions and clinical staff manage prior authorization requests as part of the intake process. You do not have to navigate Aetna’s authorization system on your own.

If your Aetna plan does require prior authorization, our team submits the necessary documentation based on your clinical assessment. In most cases, this process runs concurrently with your intake, so authorization and care start close together.

What Does Aetna-Covered Suboxone Treatment Actually Cost at FRC?

What you personally pay for Suboxone treatment depends on your specific Aetna plan, including your deductible status, copay structure, and whether you have met any out-of-pocket maximums for the year.

Factors that affect your out-of-pocket costs:

    • Whether Freeman Recovery Center is in-network under your specific Aetna plan
    • Your annual deductible and how much of it you have already met
    • Copay or coinsurance for behavioral health visits versus medical visits
    • Whether your plan covers the medication separately from the clinical services
    • The level of care you enter (IOP vs. PHP vs. standard outpatient)

Freeman Recovery Center provides free, confidential insurance verification before any financial commitment. During the verification call, our admissions team pulls your actual benefits, explains what is covered, and aims to give you a clear picture of expected costs before admission. Separate cost estimates for the medication and the clinical services are reviewed so you understand both components of your coverage.

I love this place! I look forward to coming back Freeman Alumni I will forever be greatful for you giving me my life, family, sobriety, and marriage back! I came in and instantly wanted to leave I was scared and assumed how this place was based on looks then I made it to class and met the people and employees and fell in love! Like anywhere else its what you make of it. The EMDR therapy was phenomenal I was not a believer but it was one of the most helpful things I did I also enjoyed the Acupuncture. The only complaint I have is the staff that I loved are no longer there. Please reconsider bringing them back they helped me see the light!

This is my second review. It will be just wonderful as my first. My husband was here last year and they were wonderful. Unfortunately at no fault of anyone there he is now back. This second time they were just as wonderful. They got him a bed the first day he called them. When he arrived they all welcomed him again. No one ever wants to have their family member to have to go through addiction but thank God for people like Freeman who truly care and want nothing but the best. I look forward to watching my husband’s progress and being there every step of the way. Thank you Freeman for caring and not ever giving up.
